LATEST WIMAX RELEASES

Sprint plans to launch its XOHM WiMax network by the end of this week. Sprint spokesman John Polivka said the soft launches will cover the downtown cores of Chicago, Baltimore and Washington but will rapidly expand outward. This initial launch will be limited only to Sprint employees and will focus on the central downtown areas of the test cities. This initial set of trials precedes the actual full trial networks that will be available to the general public starting in the first quarter of 2008.

  • The company reportedly has 10,000 base stations ready to go, many of them on Sprint’s existing CDMA cell towers. Sprint will expand the coverage to areas that see high demand. Sprint has ordered 1750 base stations from its three vendors (Motorola, Samsung and Nokia), as well as 20,000 antennas. The company did not provide details on what devices its employees will be using, nor what devices consumers can expect to use once the full trials get underway.

  • Alvarion today announced that Altitude, a French nation-wide WiMAX operator will use Alvarion Mobile WiMAX 4Motion solution, in the 3.5 GHz frequency band, deployment throughout the region of Aveyron.

    Upon receiving regional-based WiMAX licenses, Altitude turned to Alvarion to provide corporate, ISP and residential users with Alvarion’s Mobile WiMAX technology. Implementation of the first phase of the contract has recently commenced and includes deployment throughout the region of Aveyron.

  • Motorola announced an agreement with long-standing customer Mobilink to deploy a WiMAX 802.16e-2005 network in Pakistan. Motorola will design, plan, deploy and optimise a WiMAX network for Mobilink, and deliver integration and support services, as well as indoor and outdoor customer premises equipment. This is Motorola’s second WiMAX 802.16e network in Pakistan, with the first being a turnkey end-to-end nationwide WiMAX/IMS network awarded in 2006. This is also Motorola’s fourth commercial WiMAX deployment in the Middle East and Africa region.
  • Russian fixed-line operator Comstar plans to develop the first mobile WiMax network in Russia with Intel. Comstar plans to use its 2.5-2.7Ghz spectrum footprint in the city to build the network and is targeting its commercial launch for late 2008. Comstar, which has 452,600 broadband Internet subscribers in Moscow, signed an agreement with Intel to develop a network first in Moscow then in other areas of Russia.

    Comstar and Intel intended to enable high penetration of laptops with embedded mobile WiMAX/Wi-Fi module. Comstar expects to invest “tens of millions of dollars” in the network construction in Moscow. “We count on a mass market and estimate that the average revenue per user will be $10-$20 per month,” said Comstar Vice-President Alexander Gorbunov.

  • Beceem Communications announced that more than 10 commercial Mobile WiMAX devices have been designed around its BCS200 chipset, and will be shipping into Mobile WiMAX networks around the world in 2008. These products, primarily PC modems (USB dongles, PC cards, Express cards) and low-cost desktop modems. India has recently allocated 2.5 GHz spectrum to be auctioned off to service providers like BSNL, Reliance, Tata Communications and Bharti in 2008, finally clearing the way for large scale- Mobile WiMAX deployments in India.
  • Telsima today announced that it will be unveiling its Mobile WiMAX Base Station at the India Telecom 2007 show at New Delhi on Dec 12, 2007. The StarMAX 6400 Mobile WiMAX base station is operable with Telsima’s central provisioning system supporting high bandwidth Enterprise and Portable/Nomadic subscribers.
  • The upper region of Normandy is getting WiMAX. By next month nearly all of the inhabitants of Seine Maritime will have access to the Internet using a wireless network comprised of 35 WiMAX base stations will provide broadband access throughout the region to some 14,000 homes. The network is also complemented with 73 WiFi antennas that extend access to municipal buildings.

    The network will be operated by HDRR using its 3.5 GHz WiMAX spectrum license. HDRR is a subsidiary of TDF Group, a French company that is one of the leading terrestrial broadcast service operators in Europe.

  • Hong Kong’s Office of the Telecommunications Authority (“OFTA”) will accelerate the auction of 2.5 GHz spectrum to the fourth quarter of 2008, allowing for the introduction of WiMAX services to Hong Kong and its 426 square mile territory.

    Previously OFTA had said that the 2.5 GHz frequency band would not be auctioned until 2009 or 2010. The 2.5 GHz auction now will be combined with an auction of 2.3 GHz spectrum for Broadband Wireless Access Services (BWA), which already had been planned for Q4 2008.

INTEL WIMAX "ECHO PEAK"

Intel is one of the biggest company who is developing WiMax technology successfully in the chip side. Many service providers are seeing initial success using WiMAX based on the 802.16-2004 standard for fixed and nomadic applications such as last-mile broadband. Fixed WiMAX networks based on Intel WiMAX Connection 2250 802.16-2004 client devices are an ideal way for service providers to enter the fixed WiMAX broadband services market now with proven technology. More than 40 service providers have deployed commercial fixed WiMAX networks using Intel-based CPE equipment. In addition, Intel is actively engaged with many of the more than 240 service providers worldwide that are preparing for both fixed and mobile WiMAX trials and deployments. Most famous from them are Airspan, Alvarion, Aperto, Redline, Proxim, SR Telecom.

With the first WiMAX products (based on the 802.16e-2005 standard) becoming available in early 2007, service providers may soon begin to realize the potential of advanced fixed capabilities along with added mobility. With the addition of mobile capabilities, 802.16e-2005 WiMAX networks will be able to deliver broadband Internet access to people on the go.
Intel is bringing to market standards-based, low-cost, highly integrated silicon solutions that are expected to facilitate global delivery of notebooks, Ultra Mobile Devices, and a wide array of consumer devices with the Wi-Fi/WiMAX dual-mode module (codenamed "Echo Peak"). Add-in cards will be available in 2007 and embedded modules in 2008. The integration of Wi-Fi and WiMAX promises convenient and affordable broadband connectivity in the home, at the office, as well as on the go, enabling users to enjoy a common experience on either network and to gain access to real-time, high-value information wherever they are.

Echo Peak harnesses the range and performance benefits of the latest smart antenna technology called Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO). MIMO configurations on the Echo Peak module are 1x2 for WiMAX and 3x3 for Wi-Fi. 1x2 refers to a 1 Tx (transmit) and 2 Rx (receive) antenna configuration and 3x3 refers to a 3 Tx and 3 Rx configuration. For Wi-Fi, a Wi-Fi access point connected to a 3x3 Wi-Fi MIMO client needs 3 Tx and 3 Rx antennas to take full advantage of the client’s configuration. For WiMAX, with its asymmetric antenna configuration, the base station is assumed to have 2 Tx antennas that transmit to the 2 Rx antennas on Echo Peak, enabling what is referred to as 2x2 downlink (DL) MIMO. With this configuration, Echo Peak clients can support up to 10 Mbps on DL and up to 3 Mbps on UL.
Echo Peak is capable of supporting up to three bands for flexible radio frequency support. The three radio bands supported include 2.3-2.7 GHz, 3.3-3.8 GHz, and 5.1-5.8 GHz. All three antennas are capable of supporting all three bands. The Echo Peak Wi-Fi module includes the latest Wi-Fi advances from Intel’s new Wi-Fi solution, code-named “Shirley Peak,” to enhance range and performance. Echo Peak fully supports 802.11a/b/g networks and the latest WLAN technology based on the 802.11n specification, Draft-N to deliver more than 2x the range and up to 5x the performance of 802.11g networks. Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N technology has able to 3x3 (450 Mbps), 1x2 (TX = 150 Mbps/RX = 300 Mbps), Smart Antenna Technology/MIMO Enhancements, Beam Forming and Space-Time Diversity Coding (STBC), Beacon-Based Location Services. Echo Peak enables users to easily connect to Wi-Fi or WiMAX networks, depending on which network can deliver the best connectivity. A connection manager software utility scans for Wi-Fi and WiMAX networks and assists users to switch easily between the different networks according to connectivity rules defined by the user, IT or service providers.

Two months ago Mongolian President Enkhbayar Nambar had a official visitation in the United States of America. While this meeting president Mr.Enkhbayar has signed the "Memorandum of Understanding" contract of the "One Laptop Per Child" program which is provided by Nicholas Negroponte's OLPC community and announced that every child of our nation will connected laptop by end of 2010 year. In January, Mongolia and OLPC plan to launch a pilot project providing 20,000 units of the acclaimed XO laptops.

Now WiMax available in XO laptop

Sequans Communications says its latest line of WiMAX chips will provide chips for Quanta Computer, the largest notebook computer ODM in the world (including the One Laptop per Child project).

Quanta will use the Sequans SQN1130 chip, recently named “best chip design” by WiMAX World USA.

The Sequans chip is WiMAX Forum Wave 2 ready, uses 2X2 MIMO and will be used in ExpressCards, PCI Express Minicards, PCMCIA cards, SDIO modules, IADs, USB dongles, and indoor CPE, according to the company.

“Using Sequans’ chips enables us to deliver high performing, highly reliable Mobile WiMAX devices to global markets,” said Frank Jiang, President of Quanta Microsystems. The ITU has blessed the 2.5 GHz band for WiMAX. World-wide.

WIMAX RESEARCH DEPENDED ON ALVARION BREEZEMAX

American Ball State University and Office of Wireless Research and Mapping (OWRM) have done great research and test on Alvarion award winner BreezeMAX 3500 WiMax serie product in the United States. This OWRM work will determine that how the BreezeMAX equipment's performance possibility and feasibility works in a real life. The project covered Midwest community which has a lot of trees and clutter by 120 sectoral antenna and provided 1.5km for Indoor Units (Si CPE) and 10 or more km for Outdoor Units (Pro CPE). Proudly they did Home Test including Building Type, Location CPE Indoor, Location CPE Outdoor, Weather Condition, Surrounding Environment, Site Distance from base station, Speed and QoS of Data, VoIP, Video Streaming connection, Signal strength Download and Upload RSSI, SNR in 94 different locations.
